Academia has long been the traditional home for qualitative research, but the reality is that many researchers work outside university settings—or within institutions that provide little support for qualitative inquiry. Whether you're an independent scholar, an early-career researcher without institutional backing, or working in a field where qualitative methods are undervalued, finding resources and a supportive network may be a struggle.
At the Institute for Research and Theory Methodologies (RTM), we believe that qualitative research should be for everyone, not just those with privileged access to universities and funding. Our mission is to ensure that all researchers—regardless of affiliation or background—have the tools, mentorship, and connections they need to succeed.
One of our core values is inclusion. Too often, independent and underrepresented researchers find themselves shut out of key academic conversations simply because they lack institutional credentials or funding. Journals, conferences, and networking opportunities often favor those within academia, leaving others without a platform to share their insights.
We welcome qualitative researchers who reflect a broad range of voices. Some of the most valuable insights come from researchers embedded in communities, working in non-traditional settings, or bringing perspectives often overlooked in mainstream academia. We foster a space where these voices are not only heard but valued.
